Interview with Peter Dolan
What made you want to become a lawyer?
I had wanted to be an attorney since high school, and I can't see myself doing anything else. I really enjoy helping people and I like the pressure. The job is never the same two days in a row.
What sets your firm apart from the rest?
People actually like us. How often do you hear someone say that they like their attorney? Well, it happens here. We are very lucky that way. We treat people with respect.
What steps do you take to prepare for a difficult case?
Preparing for a difficult case starts with the first meeting. We intentionally set a low flat rate of $100 for the initial consult, but leave the amount of time open. That way, we can discuss the case fully and get all the information that we need without the client being worried about running up the bill at the start of the case. It's not unusual for the initial consult to last 2 hours or end with me saying, "Call me when you have more questions or more information, and it will be included in the initial consult fee."
Having all the information is essential in preparing for a difficult case. That way, we'll have plenty of time to serve subpoenas, if necessary, or gather other evidence. Preparing for the actual trial starts at least one week in advance with the preparation of a strong Pre-trial Statement. Then, it's a matter of blocking time on my calendar so I can devote complete time and energy to preparing me, the exhibits and the client for his/her day in court.
How do you view your role in the attorney-client relationship?
My client is my boss. I am here to answer my client's questions, give him/her a good idea of what to expect in the case, and how much it will cost and to give him/her the best advice so that he/she can make the best decisions. I want my client to be comfortable and know what is going on.
How long have you been practicing law?
I've been working for law firms since 1996, but I got my license in 1999.
Why should a prospective client choose to work with your firm?
I don't know where a client will get better treatment and experience. I do a good job at a good price.
